  • Nashville Great Books Discussion Group
Every Monday at the downtown public library, the Nashville Great Books Discussion Group uses the torch of its attention to ignite the “lit” in literature. This week’s topic is Euripides' tragedy Hippolytus, and to get the mixed metaphors percolating we'll jumpstart the ball rolling with a few icebreakers. A) Is either of the two main characters without blame? B) Are the gods as depicted by Euripedes worthy of our devotion? C) Which is more ruinous in the play's narrative arc: hubris, misogyny, or a fatal absence of gettin' it on? Phaedra, star of Hippolytus (and Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood's "Some Velvet Morning"), returns in the alexandrine verse of next week's featured volume, Racine's Phedre; subjects of future study include Nietzsche, Plutarch, John Stuart Mill and Rousseau.
